Writing a press release for our brand is part of the brief for this assignment. This morning I attempted writing mine for Fortitude’s pop-up fashion event as the final phase of their communication plan.
I had never written a press release before, so although I was a bit nervous, I was excited to get stuck into writing one. I ensured to look back at the ‘Tone of Voice’ and ‘Writing a Press Release’ seminar slides to make sure I produced a press release to the best of my ability. Key points that I took into consideration was keeping it short, ensuring my opening paragraph was strong and including a quote. I also used the press release structure example which was really helpful.
My press release broken down:
My first paragraph, in a couple of short, catchy sentence, outlines that Fortitude have announced their pop-up fashion event to mark World Oceans Day. I tried to make sure this first paragraph includes who, what, where, when and why, understanding that the release would be cut from the bottom up.
The second paragraph provides more details about the event that would be of interest and value to the reader. For example, it discusses the charity partnership and the idea that the two businesses will be working in synergy to create a positive outcome.
The third paragraph features a quote or two from the creator and designer Evie. Evie explains her inspiration behind creating a brand like Fortitude, and her ultimate goal being to make people think about their actions so that one day plastic waste can be ended.
The final paragraph provides a few extra details, but I was aware that this didn’t have to be essential information.
I actually really enjoyed the process of writing this press release. Maybe one day I could see myself working in PR and putting this learning into practice and expanding my knowledge and skills.
